Metheny's love of Brazilian music came full circle in 1987 - his Rio apartment was a Carioca magnet as a result of his earlier work with Milton Nascimento and fellow guitarist Toninho Horta. Here's a masterpiece that defies genre and style, an elegant marriage of Brazilian and American jazz that remains without equal. Metheny’s genius at blending the cosmopolitan edge of Rio’s Bossa with his own jazz sensibility resulted in a monumental vision of Brazil through American eyes.
This CD’s legacy is a hefty one – today guitar fans of all styles remain drawn to the group’s ability to transform expectations and, at the end of the day, this fact - coupled with Pat’s ‘long song’ form on tunes like ‘Minuao’, ‘Third Wind’ and ‘So It May Secretly Begin’ – mirrors one of the most obvious traits of really great music: We simply enjoy it over and over again. Choose your adjectives: Epic, eloquent, inspired, distinctive - all apply.
