This album was Elias’s fourth as a solo artist and it opened up a new chapter for the Brazilian piano and its place in contemporary jazz – so much so that the CD sat atop the Radio & Records (R&R) jazz charts for most of December, 1991.
This in itself is no great surprise – each of her recordings had earned a #1 ranking, including her previous album ‘So Far So Close’. But in the two years leading up to ‘A Long Story’ Elias grew into a new, more substantial jazz sound, while retaining her unique perspective on Brazilian music. In fact, these ten songs show a maturity only hinted at in her previous albums.
That’s not to say that Eliane Elias has ever lacked serious talent behind the keyboard of a piano or synthesizer, or that her signature fondness for those beautiful chanted vocals are anything but icing on the cake. “A Long Story’ takes these skills to a higher level.
Songs like ‘Horizonte’, ‘Life Goes On’ and ‘A Long Story’ speak to this maturity: Each of these tonal themes unfolds gracefully, giving us aural insight into her ‘Brazil’. Jazzier tracks like ‘Just Kidding’ and ‘Just For You’ help to create the sense of unhurried emotion that weaves itself throughout the album. This is Eliane at her best, before her transformation into an ‘every track’ vocalist, and its one of our favorite CDs by her.
