This is Kevyn’s debut album as a solo performer from 1991 and it’s a keeper, with special guests Sergio Mendes, Dori Caymmi and Yutaka! In fact, many of the musicians and much of the sound carries over from the studio group Velas and their self-titled CD which featured Kevyn’s lead vocals on several tracks.
Standout songs like ‘Whenever Your Heart Wants To Sing’, ‘Your Smile’ and ‘Shooting For The Stars’ easily charm with Lettau’s singular style: a strong blend of jazz with pop influence, and her duet with Sergio Mendes on Milton Nascimento’s ‘Bridges’ is both classic and telling.
There are many wonderful moments on this CD, and one of the best comes with Edu Lobo’s ‘To Say Goodbye’. This bluesy tale of love mourned comes to life with its English lyrics and it totally captivating. And the fact that Kevyn gives us her own lyrics to a few songs – including Djavan’s swinging ‘Tahiti Nui-Obi’, and a stunning set of original words to sax player Charlie Parker’s legendary solo from the late 50’s – serves to show us the promise of her career as it went forward from this first, incredible CD!
Other Voices:
From the singer:
“This was my first baby back 1990. In many ways the thrill of that experience will never be matched. Everything was so new. The musicians were the cream of the LA crop. The songs were mostly old friends to me already that I had wanted to record for a long time.
We did the entire record including the mixing in 6 days. Because I had no deal and no money it was the only way to go. And actually I am kind of glad we did it like that because everything is very fresh and live sounding. There was no time to go back and rethink how I wanted to sing things. It was first take almost all the way!
My husband Michael Shapiro put the whole project together, calling in favors from old and new friends. I had never met or sung with Russell Ferrante or Mitch Forman who both ended up playing with me over the years. Also Louis Conte and I became friends and of course Jerry Watts, who still plays and records with me!”
