The light-hearted musical feel and the clever title from this 1992 release disguises the percolating rhythms and percussion mastery of João Parahyba and the tight Brazilian jazz found on these 10 synth-driven tracks still sounds great today.
Parahyba cut his teeth as a founding member of Rio famous Trio Mocoto, a tight little combo known for its big sound and often transparent, tongue-in-cheek irreverence for all things Samba. He went on to a successful recording career with Ivan Lins, Jorge Ben, Milton Nascimento, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, Dizzie Gilespie, Al Di Meola and the legendary producer, Suba.
Its rare that rhythms-makers get to step up into the limelight, and its always a challenge to give them their due without resorting to clichéd drum solos or percussion breaks.
Here percussion merges with melody and happily, producer André Geraissati helps Parahyba avoid these traps by creating an energy-filled set that takes advantage of Brazil’s unique dance rhythms with songs like ‘Moon’s Desert’, ‘Rabo De Galo’ along with a few true to form Lambadas thrown in. But there’s more: ‘Good Morning Mister Horn’ swings in a tropically easy way and ‘Jureia’ (an early hit on The Sounds of Brazil radio show) is a tour de force showcase for Parahyba’s varied talents. Brazilian jazz that you can dance to!
