If you’ve been searching for a concise, expertly balanced collection of American Bossa Nova, look no further. This 3-CD set combines the best of Astrud Gilberto, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Stan Getz.

Verve’s excellent Jazz Masters Series extended itself deeply into Bossa Nova several years ago and this compilation was originally issued as three separate CDs: Astrud Gilberto (Verve Jazz Masters #9), Antonio Carlos Jobim (Verve Jazz Masters #13), and Stan Getz (Verve Jazz Masters #53). Taken together, these three volumes will satisfy the most dedicated Bossa Nova fan for years.

Each of these CDs is complete onto itself – a thoughtfully prepared musical profile of America’s top three Bossa Stars. Astrud Gilberto’s disc includes a selection worthy of note, not just the same ‘warmed over’ tracks we’ve seen all too often from hastily released budget lines. Here, you’ll find gems like ‘Aruanda’, ‘Day By Day’ and ‘Frevo’ plus perennial favs like ‘Vivo Sonhando’ and ‘The Gentle Rain.’ This is Astrud at her very best.

Likewise, Jobim’s disc captures the songwriter at the height of his Bossa style by tracing his career from his first album in 1963 with ‘Só Danço Samba’ and ‘Favela’ to his last hurrah in the late 80s with ‘Borzeguim’ and ‘Fascinating Rhythm’. And while, his CTI and A&M works (like the ‘Wave’ and ‘Tide’ CDs) is absent here – and we wonder why, considering that Verve had access to these titles- the fact remains that this collection of Jobim songs is among the best released, particularly with regard to the track ordering.

The Getz collection is also a carefully crafted grouping from his Bossa years. This, too sounds easier than it was, considering the sheer number of great Bossa recordings the sax player gave to us.

We have many of these songs on other CDs and on our media player too, but its always nice to have this set nearby and this set is a great choice for those wanting to add the best of Bossa Nova USA to their collection.
