There's nothing more satisfying to a serious music lover than hearing a little known artist and sensing that the musician will be "the next big thing." Vania Abrea (sister of singer Daniela Mercury) is one of these. Already a household name in Brasil, "Seio da Bahia" confirms her stature as a top-line performer and quite possibly an international star. This, her third album, is variety filled 13-song set which has already caught the attention of Billboard magazine to confirm Abreu as one of the brightest lights to come out of the MPB movement in the urban culture of Bahia since Gal Costa and Maria Bethania.

The opening track, "Mais de Mim," has one of those irresistible pop hooks that tug at the heartstrings, and her voice is so filled with emotion, that the message of love is clear. "Olhozinho," aided by sound effects, is one of many examples of the troubadour nature of this singer, who is originally from Bahia, but is based in Sao Paulo. There's a story being told and the singer conveys it emphatically and urgently with soft urban-funk and a brilliant understated string arrangement behind her. The same could be said for "Na Voltaque o Mundo Da`" and "Nena, Jacira e Dodo," but with different results.

Producer Paulo Dahlin should get as much credit for the success of this record as Abreu, as the cohesiveness of the sometimes disparate parts and rhythms is as impressive as the singer's ability to tell a story and sing a good song. Get hip, be the first to tell your friends that this woman is going to be around a while.
