"Vibrasons is a play on words - it's a combination of ‘Vibração’ (vibrations) and ‘Sons’ (sounds). I love all the remixes as they breathe new life into the tracks."
That’s 26 year old Sabrina Malheiros speakng. And after a few minutes of listening to the Rio-born singer, it’s easy to see how her creativity unfolds in unexpected ways. After all, the apple never falls far from the tree.
Sabrina is the daughter of Azymuth’s longtime bass player, Alex Malheiros and her grandfather played with Sergio Mendez. The 12 remixes found on ‘Vibrasons’ only underscore the New Bossa polish of her debut CD, ‘Equilibria’, which combined timeless Brazilian songwriting with contemporary electronics and beats to produce her Brazilian debut.
Think ‘old school meets new school’. With songs written by by Alex and Sabrina and featuring former Azymuth members Jose Roberto Bertrami (keyboards) and Ivan Conti (drums/percussion) plus the jazz group Incognito, this CD is definatley worthy of the Midas touch given by a host of top DJ and mix specialists.
The remixes by Nicola Conte, Kirk Degiorgio, Boston Rodriguez and Max Cole and Beatnik are all exclusive to this CD and the mixes from Quantic, Sriritual South, Kenny Dope, Incognito, Venom and Roc Hunter were only released on limited vinyl only DJ runs. Vibrasons is not a collection for DJs though - with a mix of styles and tempos it flows like an an artists album.
Recorded at Leo Gandelman's Zaga Studios in Ipanema, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. The music is a sublime mix of Bossa and Samba with touches of Hip-Hop, R&B and electronica, combining timeless Brazilian songwriting with contemporary electronics and beats.
We like Conte’s insight into ‘Terra De Ninguem’ (written by Marcos Valle); he brings the same outlook that he’s applied to both Rosalia de Souza and Bebel Gilberto, without sacrificing Sabrina’s style. Ditto for ‘Saudade Rio’, which really captures that Azymuth sound of days gone by – refreshing it for the next generation of Bossa Jazz fans. Several other songs make the cut as well, showing us that while the energy stays strong, remixes aren’t just for the dance floor anymore.
Sabrina’s official site proclaims that ‘Equilibria’ (her debut CD) is “the first contemporary Brazilian album that measures up to the Brazilian classics of the past”. While we’ve been around long enough to know better, we will say that Sabrina Malherios is a new talent to keep and eye (and an ear) on, and that ‘Vibrsons’ does a great job of making an already good CD even better!
