It’s Father’s Day for Joao Gilberto, too.
Celebrating The Father of Bossa Nova? Perfect timing for Summertime listening. Connect Brazil’s weekly digest keeps you informed and up to date with the best of Brazil. What will you discover?
Cover Story
Bossa Nova celebrated its 60th birthday in 2018, but there was a moment in time where a twist of fate was all that stood between Brazil’s most famous music style and a very different reality.
It all came down to the soul-searching actions of a single man. So, let’s celebrate Father’s Day by looking back at the Father of Bossa Nova, Joao Gilberto.
Even when he was 18 and growing up in rural Juazeiro, Bahia (roughly 300 miles from Salvador), he knew what he wanted and what awaited him in Rio de Janeiro.
But something (everything) went wrong in Rio. Gilberto had a dream, but no vision beyond his first gig with the vocal group Garotos da Lua, where he was hired on as a featured soloist.
The personal choices João Gilberto made could have changed the course of musical history.
Can you imagine a world without Bossa Nova? It almost happened. Read more.
