March is Women’s History Month
March salutes Brazil’s women of song, from Chiquinha Gonzaga to today’s rising female stars.
Could it be fate?
In 1987, the U.S. Congress formally adopted a law proclaiming March as Women’s History Month. Many nations – including Brazil – acknowledge International Women’s Day on March 8th.
However, the USA is the only nation to set aside the entire month in observance of women, from all cultures, creeds, and beliefs.
And maybe, that’s where fate steps in.
March’s Musical Birthdays
Because March is a historic month for Brazil’s women of song.

One of the world’s most musical cities, Rio de Janeiro celebrates its birthday on March 1st. Brazilian jazz pioneer Flora Purim was born on March 6th. Elis Regina’s day is March 17th. Eliane Elias celebrates on March 19th, Zizi Possi on March 28th, and Astrud Gilberto’s birthday comes along on March 29th.
Those are just a few of the highlights.
Ademilde Fonseca, The Queen of Choro was born on March 4th, 1921. Cleveland’s Luca Mundaca celebrates on March 3rd, Fabiana Passoni on March 8th, and Kevyn Lettau on the 18th.
MPB’s Nora Ney was born in Rio, on March 20th, 1922. Anitta came to us on March 30, and singer/actress Araci Cortes was born in Rio, on March 31st, 1904.
You’ll have to admit it. When it comes to birthdays for Brazil’s women of song, March can rightly claim legendary status.
