Jane DuBoc
Time to learn more about our featured singers Jane DuBoc and Celso Fonseca.
Jane DuBoc (pronounced like ‘Johnny’ but with a soft ‘J’) hails from Brazil’s far northeastern city of Belém do Pará – just south of the equator.
Duboc lived near Atlanta, Georgia during her college years. I first met her in Rio de Janeiro and was immediately taken with her warm personality and quick wit.
When I asked her about those college years in the US, she broke into a coy southern drawl that managed to surprise the Brazilian crowd. “Those years have never left me,” she said.
She’s also an accomplished athlete, having won medals in swimming, volleyball and tennis. In fact, her home town of Belem created the Jane Duboc Award to encourage teens in athletic competition.
A poet and author of two children’s books, an asterisk on her CV might also include “actress”. Jane was the unaccredited singer in the jazz lounge scene in the 1984 movie ‘Blame It On Rio’.

Celso Fonseca
Celso’s Fonseca’s style remains mindful of Caetano Veloso in an earlier, romantically melodic era, but with a creative edge that is all his own.
Loyal listener’s love his duet with Jussaria Silveira, ‘Feito Pra Voce’ (Made For You) as well as his classic hits like ‘Meu Samba’, too.
I had the pleasure of meeting Celso Fonseca several years ago when me made a rare stop in Chicago and we had a wonderful time. It turns out that he’s a big fan of Paulinho Garcia and I guess that’s no real surprise, considering that they both same similar vocal styles.
Fonseca was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro and got his start playing guitar with Gilberto Gil’s band in the early 1980’s before starting a successful songwriting partnership with the legendary Ronaldo Bastos.
Together they’ve created dozens of hit songs, including ‘Slow Motion Bossa’ for Claudia Moreno.
Now you know a little about our two featured singers Jane DuBoc and Celso Fonseca for The Sunday Brazilian Brunch this weekend. You’ll hear plenty of great songs when we get together to unwind and kick back. Just plan to tune in for a while on Sunday.
Happy Listening,
