Caetano Veloso. As a singer, songwriter, poet, author, philosopher and cultural crusader, his long, quixotic career has been nothing less than prolific.
Hold that thought, because when you consider the breadth of both style and substance put forth by Veloso throughout his long career, it’s possible that the word ‘prolific’ pales in definition.
His creativity is an elemental part of Brazil’s musical lexicon. The lyrics of his songs are taught as poetry in Brazilian middle schools.
But, even with multiple Grammy awards, more than 50 recordings and literally hundreds of songs written, Veloso’s music can be an acquired taste: something the lofty New York Times once hinted at when it referred to Veloso as “Brazil’s Bob Dylan.”
But Dylan had it easy when compared to the path Veloso followed.
Years ago, I had the chance to meet up with him in Rio and you can read the interview here. It’s an eye-opener.
Outstanding as a lyricist and masterful as a melody-maker, I’ve decided to include a few of both to feature Brazil’s most popular performer to preview his early-April US concert tour. Enjoy!
Happy Listening,
Scott Adams
