What’s Happening This Week at Connect Brazil
Welcome to The Sounds of Brazil!
Nara Leao was Bossa’s original muse, with a soft, gentle, and sweetly compelling voice. Her unique role carries more than a few interesting sidebars: She was the one who introduced a very shy Astrud Weinert to her future husband Joao Gilberto, and years later initiated a very public feud with Elis Regina during the early days of MPB. But that’s only part of the story. Read on:
We’re taking this week to celebrate the birthday of Bossa Nova’s original muse – singer Nara Leão. She played a pivotal role in the birth of Bossa Nova. As a star-struck teen, she hosted countless late-night jam sessions for most of Bossa’s rising performers like Sergio Mendes, Roberto Menescal, Oscar Castro-Neves, and Antonio Carlos Jobim – at her parent’s Copacabana apartment! She was also the person who introduced João Gilberto to his future wife, Astrud. Her cool and breezy singing style made her a national treasure.
Later, during the turbulent years of Brazilian dictatorship, Nara became a voice for social change. Today, the memory of her as both a musician and public figure has inspired fashion, jewelry design, and art, but she will forever be remembered as the Muse of Bossa Nova.
And as always, you’ll find the best music on the planet on The Sounds of Brazil!, with Al Jarreau’s tune with Brazilian keyboard wiz Deodato, Milton Nascimento, James Taylor, Soul Bossa Trio, a cutting edge New Bossa groove from De Phazz and classic Brazilian jazz tracks from saxophonist Leo Gandelman, and Ornelas & Leão. Even Sting with an Ivan Lins hit!
A cool breeze in Summer, and a warm wind when the weather turns cold – that’s The Sounds of Brazil! On the radio our syndicated stations and our 24/7 streaming station
