Hello again,

Nice to see you here again, today. This week, I’ll introduce you to the musical world of Ricardo Bacelar, but for many Brazilian jazz fans, ‘reacquaintance’ might be a better word.

The popular pianist from Fortaleza made musical introductions of his own, breaking onto the American scene with his 2018 release Sebastiana.

The album’s success earned an invitation from the legendary Blue Note jazz club in Rio de Janeiro, and that’s where the story begins for Ricardo Bacelar’s new album, Live In Rio.

Live in Rio was recorded there in May 2018 while Bacelar was promoting Sebastiana. He trimmed the 17-song set to the eleven tunes that appear on the live record feeling that the selected song list on the disc represents a balanced sampling of his repertoire and body of work.

The outing includes tunes penned by Brazilian icons Milton Nascimento, Tom Jobim, Gilberto Gil and Flora Purim along with American greats Benny Golson, Horace Silver, Pat Metheny and Chick Corea.

“I love the sound of the album because you can hear the energy of the live performance and the sound of playing in a jazz club. The Blue Note isn’t a big place – about 300 people – so you can hear the ambiance of playing in a small club”, says Bacelar.

Our worldwide struggle with COVID-19 encouraged the Brazilian jazz pianist to release Live In Rio late last summer, because of a simple truth: Music makes us feel better.

Ricardo Bacelar contunued. “The time in isolation is accompanied by multiple experiences and music is a fundamental vehicle for perception, connection and the formation of perspectives that bring meaning to the events on personal, spiritual and emotional levels. I wanted to remind people of the sound of live music. People need the warm sound and feelings of live music as opposed to the electronic stuff we hear on studio recordings. By listening to this live album, you can embrace the warm sound from the safety and comfort of your home.”

I hope you’ll enjoy the show this week.

Happy Listening,
Scott Adams
